Windows 10 comes with backup functionality pre-installed, but by default it is not enabled. This tutorial will show how to set up a new drive to back up your Windows 10 PC.
Backup: File History
Windows 10 Backup is now called File History. It is designed to keep a back up version of your files as well as previous versions of these files. Effectively, File History in Windows 10 allows to restore not just accidentally deleted files, but also files that were modified in the process.
In order to enable File History in Windows 10, a second physical drive is required. This may be a USB Disk Drive, Memory Stick or a Flash Drive.
How to Back Up in Windows 10 with File History
- Click Start Button
- Select Settings
- In the new Settings window, choose Update and Security
- Click on Backup button of the left
- Click on + Add Drive button
- Select your removable drive from the list
- That’s it!
By default, Windows 10 backs up files in your Home directory:
C:\Users\<username>
You can also access these files by typing this shortcode command in Explorer:
%UserProfile%
